Using Monochromatic Color in Your Home
Some people don’t like the monochromatic look and think it’s boring. If you do it right, the monochromatic theme can be used for stunning effect in a room. This style of decorating might seem bland and lifeless to some and if you’re one of them, the tips and ideas in this article will help you create a room with depth and appeal. White and beige aren’t the only colors that are used in this style of decorating.
Your rooms can and should have any colors used in them, this will help you create personality and interest for the room. Reds, purples and emerald greens are overwhelming colors and should be used in rooms that you don’t plan on spending too much time in.
The Secret Lies in the Colors
You are going to want to use three shades of the same color when creating the monochromatic look. Take brown tones for example, light beige, deep amber and chocolate brown will make for a stunning look; peach and terracotta are great choices as well. One of your colors needs to dominate, preferably the medium one. For example, take beige and paint the walls this color, then get pieces of furniture with amber tones and accent baseboards with chocolate brown. The strongest color in the room should be amber.
Choosing Patterns and Adding Texture
The monochromatic decorating theme borrows its depth and interest from patterns and textures you intermingle. This style will do perfectly with geometric patterns and bold stripes as long as the strongest colors come from your three chosen shades. Combinations of silky and nubby fabrics will give you the most appeal. Nubby textured accent rugs and silky curtains work perfectly. You can also add rich texture by using tapestries.
You can add more appeal to the room with a bold stripe of color painted around the room. For example, the whole room could benefit from the addition of an 18” wide stripe of chocolate brown around the entire room on a beige wall Not only will this a bit of life to the walls, but it will also visually extend the room.
Accessories Add a Punch of Color
Smaller accessories can be used to add a punch of color to the room, but you need to keep furniture, walls and floor in the three original colors. Pictures containing a bright splash of red or yellow can be used in the beige/amber/chocolate theme. You can also use a floral arrangement with these colors or a bowl with red apples and bananas in the center of a coffee table. With the use of large pillar or square shaped candles in red and yellow you can add more small accents to the room.
The three basic colors are a must for the larger details; however, you may add bursts of color with the smaller details. You will be able to create rooms and spaces that are beautiful, unique and appealing to all who enter if you decide to use a single dominant color.
