Plumber rates vary, so shop around. Compare plumbers by their experience. Find out what they have to offer and compare their rates. If you do enough research, you may find a plumber for a great price. When you shop around, find a plumber that offers free estimates. That way, you can meet with him to discuss your options and get an accurate price for the work.

Before you hire a plumbing expert, find one that offers help around the clock. If you have an emergency, you will have peace of mind knowing that you can call someone and do something about it no matter what time it is.

You should also hire someone who has a lot of experience fixing plumbing problems. You should not hire anyone who does not have a license or someone who has not had their license for a long period of time. Experienced plumbers are smarter and more competent and they will do a better job. Experienced plumbers will also get the project done a lot faster than those without experience.

Before you hire a plumbing expert, find out if the work is guaranteed. Find out how long the work is guaranteed for. For instance, it may be guaranteed for a month or three months. You should definitely ask for the guarantee and written estimate in writing. If the plumber provided you with a contract, read everything carefully before you sign it. Bear in mind that if you do not get the guarantee in writing and something goes wrong, you can lose a substantial amount of money.

Find a plumber that is bonded, insured, and licensed to work in your state. There are many honest, competent plumbers out there. However, there are also many bad apples around that will try to scam money out of you, so be careful. Don’t hire someone who makes you feel uneasy. If you are nervous about hiring a plumber, ask for references. Make sure his clients are happy with his work before you spend your hard-earned money. You may also want to consider hiring a reputable plumbing company over an independent contractor.

You can find a good plumber by scouring the search engines, reading the newspapers, looking through classified ads, and searching contractor listings online. You can also find out about a company’s reputation by reading online reviews. Lastly, you can find a good service company by speaking with your real estate agent. They often refer their clients to contractors and home improvement companies.

If you follow these tips, you will find a great plumber. It’s just a matter of time. If you compare several plumbers or service companies, you will find someone who can deliver fantastic work.

Do you need plumbing work done around the house?

A water heater is a great addition to a home because it can be very helpful for the homeowners. The primary purpose of such a device is to warm or heat up water for the use of bathing or cleaning up. This device is usually installed in bathrooms or any other water source for homes or establishments where it may be deemed necessary. There are a lot of uses for hot or warm water, most of which are sometimes taken for granted when one is used to the device. When it breaks down, the importance of maintenance and upkeep comes to light, a little too late.

Choosing the Next One

Following the same fuel type as your old one makes sense since there will be little adjustment for the new device. If one is so inclined to change the fuel source of the new device them make sure you are aware of the implications and costs of doing so before even buying the new fixture.

The Connections

It is always a good idea to check the source for the water heater before buying it. Double check the sizes of the pipes to make sure they are in accordance to the openings in the new one. It is not actually difficult to make a new connection if the pipes of the machine do not fit the ones of the source but the integrity of the connection may be compromised with the addition of another pipe that facilitates the correction. If in case, the tubes from the water source were connected to the machine without the use of an inlet pipe or a union connector then the installation may require the addition of these. The temperature and pressure relief valve is usually placed at the connections from the structures plumbing.

Installation

Before anything else, the homeowner should turn off the utilities needed to run the water heater. Water, gas or electricity should all be turned off to prevent any accidents. The replacement usually needs two or more people to do since these machines are on the heavy side. It is important to clean the spot of the old one to ensure that there are no wet areas, dust or other corrosives. Align the building’s existing plumbing unto the new unit and try to make sure that the unit is level. It is now time to install the pressure relief valve as well as any other fitting which may have come with the new unit.

The use of Teflon on the fittings, pipe connections or valves is a good idea. Electrically powered or gas powered units may have different fittings to accommodate the difference of the power source.

If you need installation or repair of a water heater Wheaton company, Ferrari Plumbing Inc., has the experience and the expertise to do the best job for you.

Drain cleaning is something that a lot of people dread with a passion. Clogged drains are something that everyone has dealt with one time or another but did you know that there are many different ways to clean your drain? There are as many ways to clean a drain as there are clogs for the drains in question. Most of the time a homeowner can take care of the clog themselves. It is just that simple to do but most people don’t realize that it is. So how can you do it yourself and when do you call the professionals?

Simple clogs of hair and grease can be taken care of by the homeowner using a variety of measures. Truth to be told, most homes don’t need drastic measures and can take care of the clog using things such as baking soda and vinegar for example. It can be just that simple. You may also need to resort to the use of a plunger to clear a drain. Drain opening can be accomplished with liquid drain openers as well if you so choose. Using a snake is another option for the homeowner.

Now to prevent clogs from happening, you would need a drain cover in order to stop the clogging. However bear in mind that sometimes the best idea is to simply call your local plumber and have them come out to take care of the clog. It is simply the more financially responsible as well as reasonable. Plumbers have equipment that the standard homeowner doesn’t in order to clear the drains quickly and get them flowing again. Just remember that you have to be specific as your plumber is not a mind reader and cannot diagnose on vague information.

If you have a clog that still will not come free after you have used many of the methods listed above then you need to call a plumber for the problem at hand. You can damage pipes without meaning to, if some of these procedures are not done right. You really don’t want busted pipes and water damage because a cleaning went wrong. This is where the professionals should be called in so that you can get your sinks clear of clogs. Bear in mind that this can be a bit costly as plumbing services are expensive.

This is where preventative maintenance comes in. If you practice this, you won’t have to call your local plumber for a house call. So this really doesn’t have to be a pain to clear your drain. It can be as simple as installing a drain cover for catching hair and grease to keep it from collecting in your drain. This is the most basic of preventative medicine for your drains. Otherwise you may indeed have to call a plumber if methods like ones described above don’t work for you. Take care of your drain and it will take care of you. If you don’t then the plumber will come to you.

Garbage disposals offer homeowners and renters alike, the convenience of ridding themselves of unwanted items, quickly and easily. It’s a simple fix for various types of waste and a staple in most every home. But what happens if this handy device breaks down? In this article we will outline some simple plumbing tips and techniques to help you potentially fix your garbage disposal before deciding whether to call in a professional.

1. Keep Your Hands Out of the Drain

Fixing a broken disposal is not worth losing a hand over. Keep in mind that there is a motor and a blade underneath the drain which can cause serious injury if you’re not careful. Be sure to unplug all parts prior to attempting any sort of repair.

2. Tighten All Connections

Check for leaks by running water through the removal and tighten any connections where leaks are apparent. You may also try taking the entire unit apart and replacing the seal. If the leak persists, you should replace the drain gasket. If all of these methods fail, it’s time to take the unit in for servicing.

3. Check Breakers

As the garbage disposal is an electrical device, it has been known to trip circuit breakers in some instances. Thus, it’s a good idea to check and see whether the panels have been turned off. In this case, all that is needed is to flip the switch and reset the disposal.

4. Freeing the Flywheel

The flywheel is the piece of the disposal that spins the impeller, which cuts up the waste. This piece may have become stuck, in which case you’ll need a hex wrench to free it. Find the hex hole under the unit, apply the wrench, and rotate it until the piece is loosened.

5. Maintaining the Impellers

If you suspect the issue lies with the idea that the trash is not being properly shredded, you may need to sharpen the impellers. In this case, you’ll need to remove the entire unit. Once this is accomplished, remove the flywheel and take the impellers out the sharpen them. Based on the type of unit, you may even be able to leave the impellers in place while sharpening.

6. Clog Removal

Remove the bolts on the drain pipes and inspect for any readily apparent clogs. Remove anything that is stopping the passage of waste and replace the pipes.

If you’ve tried each of these possible solutions and still find you have a problem on your hands, if just may be time to call in a professional. The damage you could potentially do by experimenting may end up costing you more in the long run. Play it safe, and when in doubt, ask for help.

In Dallas Plumbing companies offer the services of expert technicians and plumbers who will offer perfect analysis of the problems you may be facing, and provide the right solutions.

Buying a quality sump pump to help get and keep your basement dry is a smart investment. It will remove unwanted water due to leaks and poor drainage, not to mention providing protection against water flooding which is not pretty and very costly. The following questions will help you decide the scope of your needs and if you may want to do it yourself or hire a professional. Whichever you decide you’ll need to identify the source of water entry first in order to get to a workable solution.

Let’s get started:

1. Can the flooding be prevented?

Check all possible water entry possibilities; windows, cracks on the wall, cracks on the floor, corners, wall joints, foundation footings and make appropriate patches to block out the water. Your local hardware should be able to help you with the materials needed and pointers to get the job done. Also check outside to see if water is collecting near the foundation. Gutters should be clear of debris and able to transport water at least three feet from the house. If the water is not running away from the house, the solution could be as simple as building up the ground near the foundation and letting gravity do the work. This may not solve your problem entirely but will certainly point you in the right direction.

2. Do you have a sump pit?

Let take a look at where the sump pump will be located. Having an existing sump pit will save you from having to dig a new one. If you don’t have a sump pit you’ll need to establish one at the lowest point where water gathers in your basement. The standard pit size is 24″ deep by 18″ wide and at least 12″ from the wall. This size pit should be able to accommodate most submersible sump pumps. If you have a small sump pit then a pedestal pump will be your answer. Pedestal pumps are just as efficient just a little nosier because the motor sits perched about the sump bit.

3. What is the volume of water?

This question will help you decide on the size sump pump you’ll need. Most home owners can get away with a 1/4 or 1/3 hp sump pump. This is pretty much the standard sizes. However, in areas where flooding is a high risk issue, a higher hp pump would serve your needs. The normal ranges for these pumps are 1/2 to 3/4 hp. Here is another tip, if you sump pump is constantly running it dictates water is not being discharged at an acceptable rate.

4. Do you need a back-up?

Having a battery-run, back-up pump will ensure that you always have a working pump, should you primary pump quits working due to a power outage. Most are equipped with alarm capabilities, so you know when the primary pump has failed and your back-up has kicked on. You may decide that a battery backup for your primary pump will make sense if you experience power outages on frequent basis. If you live in a high risk flood area you may want to invest in a generator as well. It’s always best to check with your local insurance agent. Make sure you are covered in the event you unfortunately experience a flooding disaster.

5. Can you install it yourself?

Installing a sump pump is pretty straight up. Read the manufacturer’s directions and decide if you think this is a DIY project. Besides digging a sump pit (if necessary) the assembling is basic. You’ll need to measure for the correct pipe length, purchase the PVC pipes, elbow joints and connect them from the sump pump to the area you want the water to end. The trick here is to measure accurately and pre-assemble before cluing joints securely. The discharge pipe should be at least three feet from the foundation. A must have item here is a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFC) for your protection.

6. What maintenance is involved?

Once the pump is up and running, little maintenance is needed. Test you system every two months or so and clean out the sump once a year. If water is not being removed efficiently, check for blockage. Besides that, you just want the seals to remain tight and that the system is primed to it job when it is needed. If you have a back-up system, ensure the batteries are fully charged and test the alarm system.

These tips will help avoid a flooding disaster. Don’t wait to evaluate your system or problem until you are forced to. Consult with a professional if needed. You can then decide which part of project you can do yourself. A flooded basement is not a pretty site and it can be very costly.

Finally, your basement should be kept dry to avoid mold from becoming a nuisance. Mold will affect your health and should be taken seriously. If you suspect a mold problem it would be wise to call in a professional to help get rid of the problem. Keep your children and pets away from the area until the problem has been eradicated.

Think whole house water purification is a waste of money?

It’s unbelievable what is being found in America’s tap water. Researchers from the U.S. EPA have found serious contaminants in many water samples taken across the country.

#1 – The Environmental Working Group reported that weed killers and many different pesticides were found in the tap water of 28 out of 29 cities tested. These chemicals were at levels that present serious health risks. They estimate that 45,000 babies in these cities drank infant formula reconstituted with contaminated tap water.

#2 – A USA Today-Special Report examined 3,000 of the largest city utilities and found that 65 of them are manipulating the results of tests used to detect lead in water, violating federal law and putting millions of Americans at risk.

Visit http://www.epa.gov/safewater/dwinfo/index.html to find out what’s in your city’s water.

#3 – “There’s no telling precisely how many Americans get sick each year from drinking bad water… I would say that the cases we learn about are the tip of the iceberg.” (Waterborne Disease Expert, CDC)

#4 – According to the EPA, lead is the number-one environmental health threat to our children, causing severe physical and mental developmental delays.

#5 – The U.S. Council of Environmental Quality warns that “Cancer risk among people drinking chlorinated water is as much as 93% higher than among those whose water does not contain chlorine.” It is not uncommon to find more chlorine in tap water than is recommended safe for a swimming pool.

If someone in your family already has cancer or another disease, it’s even more important to use whole house water purification. Why put an extra toxic load of chlorine on someone who is already ill?

#6 – There have been outbreaks in city water supplies of chlorine-resistant parasites like Cryptosporidium and Giardia. This intestinal parasite causes flu-like symptoms, and can be fatal to persons with impaired immune systems, including children and the elderly.

The Natural Resources Defense Council claims that more than 45 million Americans drink and bathe in municipally-treated water where these dangerous parasites are found. In Milwaukee recently, more than 100 people died and 400,000 became sick in less than a month. With a superior whole house water filter system, your family can be spared from this sort of tragedy.

#7 – Nobody knows how many toxic elements may actually be in tap water. According to the Ralph Nader Research Group, more than 2,100 toxic chemicals have already been detected in U.S. water supplies. Virtually all public water systems have some level of contamination.

Early in the twentieth century, before we had this host of chemical compounds in our environment, 1 in 50 people could expect to get cancer in his or her lifetime. Today, half of all Americans are expected to become cancer statistics.

There is no such thing as new water; Mother Nature just keeps reusing and recycling the same contaminated water over and over. Our water treatment plants are not designed to remove these man-made chemicals. We have learned the hard way that any chemical we use will eventually wind up in our household water.

Without waiting for a conclusion on the actual effects of drinking and bathing in this cocktail of contamination, we can assume that it will be negative. The only question is how negative… and why wait?

A whole house water purification system is the easiest, most effective and most economical way to have safe, healthy water for you and your family.

Reverse Osmosis Units work to a certain degree but do not provide us with the healthy living that we need for a long and happy life. Why would a system supposedly good for your body, not perform as it should? That is what we plan to show you in this article. Reverse Osmosis water filtration systems do not live up to their promise.

Reverse Osmosis units work fine if properly maintained at all times and you have an endless supply of water at your disposal. They use at least 3-4 gallons of water for every gallon they clean and filter for you.

Reverse osmosis water filtration systems work by forcing large amounts of water under high pressure through a porous membrane. The membranes need to be cleaned or replaced quite often for the unit to perform at its peak.

There is too much wastage of water that is in short supply these days. If you forget to change the membrane in time or if it becomes damaged the reverse osmosis units will not work as they should and will end up wasting even more water than normal. The original wastage being bad enough, why would you want more?

Another fact about reverse osmosis units is that they take a long time to filter the water. It takes, in general, about 3-4 hours to filter one gallon of water. It’s a very inefficient process for the home.

Another problem with reverse osmosis water filtration systems is that they remove much more than they should, leaving your water nearly mineral free. Some minerals are good for our bodies. If all of them are removed it can hurt us more than helping our bodies stay healthy.

Reverse Osmosis units came into existence when the Printing industry needed water that was free of minerals for their use. Your body works slightly differently than that. It is not a machine like the printing industry uses. It needs minerals. And to take something from an industrial application to home use is not the best thing to do.

So, reverse osmosis water filtration systems remove the minerals, but cannot filter out all pesticides. Only those heavier than water molecules will be removed. What it means for you is that most pesticides still go into your body and that is not what you want.

Reverse osmosis units were once a very popular option for people who were just getting into water filtration. A very good sales pitch was responsible for their popularity. However, a sales pitch can only last for a short time if the product does not back up the claims.

The water from reverse osmosis water filtration systems is equivalent to taking distilled water and adding pesticides to it. Would you want to drink it?

In a nutshell, reverse osmosis water filtration systems are not good for your health, since they take out what they should not, and leave in what should be removed. In nearly all cases, reverse osmosis units are not the right choice for home use.

If you’ve been searching for a shower head or whole house water filter, you’ve no doubt come across Wellness shower filters. If you’ve dug further, you’ve found Wellness enterprises produces top quality full featured whole house and chlorine removing shower filters. You’ll also notice that they are two to three times more expensive than any equal quality full featured water filter.

The reason for the price difference is unique, to say the least. Wellness enterprises use a Japanese variant of filter design created for their Olympic swim team. The design, beyond standard filtration systems used in most chlorine removing shower filters, is centered on running water past rare volcanic Japanese rocks.

Wellness shower filters claim these rocks imbue (red flag) water with anti-bacterial properties and alter water’s pH level, just by coming into contact with the stones. It’s an interesting idea, but the scientific basis is just not there.

There are many excellent chemical and chlorine removing shower filters on the market. Their designs are technologically advance and supported by scientific data. Most of the better chemical and chlorine removing shower filters provide certified performance data. The best are certified by Underwriter’s Laboratory to remove 99.99% of the chlorine that comes through the tap.

But, in case you’re not convinced, let’s look a little more closely at the Wellness shower filters, because, if you judge by price, you might think they are the best. What about those rocks?

The first type Wellness shower Filters Company refers to is Bakuhan™. The Japanese refer to it as Bakuhan-seki and geologists refer to it as quartz porphyry. Scientific studies have been conducted using this mineral as a soil additive with favorable results.

The studies found that due to the mineral’s highly porous nature, soil treated with it retained higher levels of magnesium and calcium than otherwise possible and thusly soybean yield was increased. A bonus for the soybean industry, but we are talking about chemical and chlorine removing shower filters. The problem arises when you realize retaining minerals and nutrients is counter-productive when it comes to filtering water.

Many of us have “hard” water. The mineral content is too high or poorly balanced. So, we choose to invest in chlorine removing shower filters, because the advertisements claim that they will improve or “enhance” the mineral content of the water. The best choice, and least expensive by the way, is ion exchange. Hard minerals are “exchanged” for softer minerals. Water feels better. Cleansers perform better.

The second type of stone used in Wellness shower filters is referred to simply as Taicho™. In Japanese, this basically means “wellness.” You can’t fault them for being clever. Wellness Enterprises claims this rare igneous (or volcanic) rock emits far infrared light that kills bacteria and causes any water exposed to the far infrared light to retain anti-bacterial properties. What they don’t bother mentioning is everything emits far infrared light and the radiation is far too weak to kill or change anything.

There are many great, let me reemphasize “great”, chemical and chlorine removing shower filters on the market that balance both pH and mineral content, but Wellness shower filter cost two or three times as much as they do. The choice is yours.
