Vintage Designing – What Lamp Choices Do I Have?

Published by San Antonio Decorator under Lighting

If you are decorating a room with a vintage theme then you will probably need a vintage lamp or two. There are two styles of lamps that can accomplish this for you, either a vintage lamp, or just a vintage style lamp will do the trick.

A vintage lamp is one that is just that vintage, or in other words old. These lamps can be in poor condition and may need some work done on them, or you can get them in great condition and ready to use. Since these lamps are usually one-of-a-kind I can’t list lamps you can get here, but a will list a few places you can find them.

Amazon- This will usually have a couple lamps like this but you will usually have to sort through new lamps as well.

eBay- This site always has a ton of vintage lamps, however, you need to make sure that what you are getting is quality since there is a lot of crap listed.

VintageLights.com- This site has a lot of neat vintage light fixtures and lamps. It also has catalogs and books you can look through from the early 1900’s.

A vintage style lamp is a new lamp that is just modeled and painted to look vintage. These lamps can be bought just about anywhere and can match any room. Some selections you can consider are:

Vintage Mickey Lamp Base and Shade- This is a very nice looking lamp that has an older style mickey swinging a bat on a green base that has blue trim. It also comes with a red lampshade and works well for a red, white and blue styled nursery or kids room.

Vintage Americana Lamp- This lamp features red, white and blue in flag style decor all over the lamp. The base is a big block that has red and white stripes with a blue stripe and white stars across the top. Then is comes with a white shade that features flags and blue trim with white stars. This would go great in a living room or sitting room.

Quoizel Vintage Embroidery Table Lamp- This lamp is a European vintage style and looks absolute incredible. It has an elaborate candelabra style body and a tan shade with green and eggplant colored vines going up it. It measures 16 inches high and would look lovely in any room.

Buy Antique Floor Lamps

Published by San Antonio Decorator under Lighting

Ever wonder why some people buy antique floor lamps? Find out why, and maybe you should buy one for yourself as well. Floor lamps are very useful when it comes to lighting the house. They can be placed anywhere as long as there is a floor. While some people will use it for the sole purpose of lighting an area, some people would get one to collect, especially antique ones.

Most vendors will only sell you vintage style lamps. Notice the word style in it because it means they are reproductions of antiques. Obviously, the cost of it is much cheaper than finding a real vintage lamp. Collectors might pay 6-figure on a real one if they are collecting it. Some museums will carry and preserve lamps that were made in the early 20th century.

Be careful when making a purchase for real antique floor lamps. There are people who prey on beginners who are not familiar with real and fake lamps. You need to study antiques if you are going to become a collector for lamps. Places such as eBay, have quite a few people selling fake lamps. They promise that they are authentic, and slap a cheap price on it. If it is cheap, then it is too good to be true.

The prices will vary depending on the demand and how old the lamp is. There are lamp collection guides out there to tell you how to tell the quality of the lamps as well as figure out the estimate cost.

Look for cheap floor lamps that are both low cost and high quality.

LED Lighting – Ready for Prime time?

Published by San Antonio Decorator under Lighting

Reducing electricity needed for lighting will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, save billions of dollars and reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. There’s no doubt that light-emitting diodes (LEDs) will help reduce electricity needs. They already dominate the market for traffic lights, automotive tail lights, store signs and other specialty design applications. Can they penetrate the residential market and perhaps dominate?

LED lighting is beginning to appear in the residential market. The technology is advancing at a fast pace with increased efficiencies and new products coming to market. Lofty prices are the biggest limitation to residential use. As the technology and market acceptance improves, production volumes will increase, more manufacturers and distributors will enter the market, product selection will improve and prices will fall. LED lamps today can cost more than 4 times as much as comparable compact fluorescents (CFLs).

Is LED lighting a suitable residential alternative to incandescents or CFLs?

It depends…… on the application and the cost. They’re environmentally friendly and cost aside; they’re very effective for under counter and accent lighting, landscape lights and night lights. Consider a “test drive” before buying LEDs for reading lamps, spots or floods. Cost may be a barrier. If not, it’s a matter of personal preference.

Advantages of LEDs:

• Very low energy consumption

• Long service life – up to 50,000 hours

• Rugged and durable – resistant to thermal and vibration shocks

• Superior directional light distribution (spots)

• No infrared or ultraviolet radiation

• Safe and environmentally friendly – cool to the touch, contain no mercury

• Instant activation, no flicker, dimmable

• Broad color range – can produce white light and all colors of the spectrum

Disadvantages:

• Expensive

• Limited variety

• Limited availability

• Heat sensitive; excessive heat will reduce effective life

• Lenses or reflectors needed to create a controlled, broad beam (floods)

• Colors may differ from incandescent and fluorescent

Residential applications:

• Linear strip lighting (under kitchen cabinets)

• Outdoor and landscaping lighting

• Art lighting

• Night lights

• Stair and walkway lighting

• Task and reading lamps

• Recessed lighting/ceiling cans

The Fundamentals Of Bathroom Ceiling Lighting

Published by San Antonio Decorator under Lighting

Every day, before we head off to the outside world, we spend some time in the bathroom first, taking care of ourselves. The bathroom is also a place where most of us spend time relaxing after a long day at work, maybe by soaking in the bath tub. Homeowners may not put too much attention to it but one of the most important amenities in a bathroom is the lights, especially bathroom ceiling lighting.

Yes, lighting plays a significant role in both the functionality and aesthetics of a bathroom. With the proper lighting, your bathroom can crossover from simply adequate to truly sophisticated. Proper illumination is necessary in every bathroom especially if it is used mainly for grooming and hygiene. Of course, activities such as shaving or putting on make up needs sufficient lighting in order to be done properly. To achieve this, you can install bathroom ceiling lighting fixtures that will provide the needed illumination. You can install a decorative lighting fixture and suspend it from the ceiling. This will not only provide enough light throughout the entire room but will also introduce an elegant style in your bathroom. In the shower, you can also install overhead lighting that will cast enough light into the area without producing too much glare. Ceiling lights will also brighten enclosed corners in your bathroom.

Bath tub areas need a more subtle lighting to create a more relaxed atmosphere and subdued ambiance. This can be achieved by using recessed lighting fixtures that gently diffuse the light but still provide sufficient illumination. A good technique is to focus the light towards the edge of the tub. This will help avoid dull lights in your bath area. Meanwhile, if you are fond of reading while on the toilet, you can install reading lamps either on the ceiling or the wall.

The most important area of the bathroom that should be given proper illumination is the vanity area or the mirror. You can install bathroom ceiling lighting that is positioned in a way that will eliminate shadows and dark circles on your face. This way, the clear and sufficient illumination will aid your grooming and help you look your best. Aside from overhead lighting, you can also use sconces that will provide just enough light without casting hard shadows on your face. If you want to feel like a movie star, you can also install fluorescent light bulbs, either bare or ensconced, along the sides of your vanity mirror.

To create a relaxing atmosphere throughout your bathroom and still provide the enough illumination, you can opt for rope lights embedded in recessed moldings along the outer edges of your ceiling. This will create a more cozy and comfortable ambiance in your bathroom. To save up on electricity, you can use LED (light-emitting diodes). Other bathroom ceiling lighting is also available to suit you individual taste.
