Tile flooring is a popular choice is both domestic and commercial environments, especially in kitchen and washroom areas. Aside from the range of designs and colours on offer, there is also the perception that tiles are easier to clean and maintain, especially in the aforementioned areas where spillages are likely.

When the tiles look dirty, they can be washed, usually with just water, and mopped and, just like cleaning a window, it looks like new. However it is extremely common that even professionally installed tiling can start to look dull, uneven and have an unsatisfactory look over time, even when the tiles are in good condition and regular cleaning takes place.

The reason for his is usually the grout – a substance that usually presents some problems. Grout is a certain construction material, generally used to fill voids and seal joints – like the spaces between floor tiles. It basically consists of a mixture of cement, sand and water, is not particularly smooth and is a porous substance, meaning that liquids can filtrate it easily – and cause staining.

If you take a close look at a tiled floor, you may notice that the grout between tiles is generally recessed slightly below the surface level of the tile, for this reason this is the area where any spillages will go to first. This, combined with the porosity of the substance – explains why grout stains so easily, and obviously, in an uneven way.

As the surface of grout is not smooth like the ceramic tile, it doesn’t just wipe clean, and spillages such as wine or coffee can stain very quickly. You can help the situation by cleaning spillages immediately, but stains and bacteria build up over time. By the time a stain becomes noticeable; many layers of dirt and bacteria may have built up – rendering traditional cleaning methods ineffective. This staining is not even and can leave the floor with an unsatisfactory finish (spillages are far more likely near a sink or wash basin, or near a table where people drink). At this stage you will need to contact a professional company that specializes in cleaning tile grout to restore the floor to its original state.

Obviously when tiles and grout are clean, or restored, the same problem still faces you – that of maintenance. The main recommendation here would be to consider some sort of sealer for the floor and for the grout in particular. There are common or colour grout sealers which will protect the grout and add a degree of impermeability which will aid future maintenance efforts. You should consider contacting a specialist tile floor cleaning company, which will be able to advise you of the best way to maintain your floor.

Your choice of kitchen flooring should complement the style and decor you’re trying to create in the room. Although people tend to go for certain flooring options more than others, that doesn’t necessarily mean you have to fall in line. If you’re looking to put flooring in your kitchen, here are a few different options to consider.

Wood Flooring for the Kitchen
When it comes to kitchen, wood floors are a common choice. As a matter of fact, one of the most popular types of flooring options available is wood flooring. There are several different types of wood available that would work great for a kitchen floor. The warmth that’s inherent in wood adds character to a kitchen space, whether it’s a basic pine slat or a trendier, more environmentally conscience bamboo wood floor. Choose a color and type of wood that fits with your kitchen’s style and theme.

Tile Flooring: Timeless and Tasteful
Tile flooring in the kitchen is also very popular. With this type of flooring you have many different options to choose from, from different colors and designs to a variety of materials. Plain tile floors, ones that are laid out in a design, and others that resemble stone or are decorative are just some of your options. Both ceramic and porcelain tile floors are resistant to stains and scratches and require little maintenance. The tiles are prone to cracking, however, so try not to drop anything on them.

Laminate Flooring in the Kitchen
If you’re looking for a less expensive choice for the kitchen floor, consider laminate. You have a variety of options to choose from when it comes to the new laminate flooring that’s available. A very popular type of laminate flooring is that which looks like wood and can easily pass for a genuine wood floor. Also available are laminate floors that look like tile as well as plain laminate floors, which can provide the perfect neutral in a visually striking kitchen. The reason may people choose laminate floors over a tile or real wood floor is that they can be installed easily and cost much less.

Concrete Flooring in the Kitchen
People don’t always associate concrete flooring with a kitchen, but in recent years they have become increasingly popular. It’s important to note that a concrete floor designed for the kitchen differs from a regular concrete floor. These concrete floors are decorated and stained and often have patterns and colors incorporated into their matrix. Concrete floors are extremely durable—and are also very reasonable when compared to a real wood floor.

Vinyl for a Kitchen Floor
Vinyl tile or sheet is another inexpensive flooring option for the kitchen. When people think of vinyl, they often think of the old linoleum floors of the past, but vinyl has actually come a long way. Now vinyl comes in all kinds of patterns, colors, and designs, and can add much style and beauty to any kitchen. Not only is vinyl inexpensive, but you can install the floor yourself. With its versatility, you can make a clear statement with that vinyl tile floor or let it be a quiet, calming addition to your kitchen. There are thousands of options, so it’s up to you what type of vinyl tile you choose.

These are just a few of the many flooring options you have to ch oose from for your kitchen. If you’ve narrowed down your selection to a couple of options, then you need to go and find out what’s locally available to you. You may be surprised to find out just how many options you really have.

About the Writer…
They carry a large selection of American made solid oak furniture for your home office, dining room and bedroom.

Carpet is a sizeable investment and there are certain few tips that should be followed to make it last longer. Apart from the general carpet cleaning these few steps will give your carpet a whole new lease of life. Improperly cared for carpet will look soiled with fibers that are crushed and flattened out.

1) Use mats: Mats are really a great way to prolong the carpet’s luxurious look and feel. So if you have invested in carpets do not forget to invest in some mats which are rough enough to trap any dirt before it moves on to the carpet and also absorbent towards moisture. The inside mat should always have a rubber base so that it stays put and also should not be very thick. You can buy ones which are thin and easy to clean. These mats should also be cleaned at least as regularly as possible otherwise they will become storehouse of dirt which will eventually pass off into the carpet only. Essentially every hard surface around the carpet should have a mat, especially the kitchen. Kitchen oils and food stuff can be really messy if tracked on to the carpet.

2) Maintaining the Vacuum cleaner: Vacuuming the carpet at least once a week should always be the norm in every house. There are certain traffic lanes on each carpet; these should be vacuumed more readily specially in houses with children. Having said that, one of the most important things is the efficiency of the vacuum cleaner. Vacuum cleaners are only 70% effective with the bag half full. Once the bag is half full makes sure it’s changed. The brush of the vacuum cleaner also needs replacements, damaged brush only results in 50% efficiency so special attention should be given to that too.

3) Renew Finishes: Make sure your carpet is given a renewed soil and stain resistant finish from time to time. You might have bought a carpet which has a finish but it tends to wear off after a while, hence it needs to be applied again.

4) Steam Cleaning: Steam cleaning is essential after at least a year even if your carpet doesn’t appear to be soiled. Most people tend to wait for the look of the carpet to exhibit the dirt before they opt for steam cleaning. However this is not a good practice as dirtier the carpet, lower will be the efficiency of the cleaning. There is a lot of oil residue in the air which contribute hugely towards the regular soiled look of the carpet and are not removed by vacuuming. Hence steam cleaning should be used.

Learn more about different types of carpets like bedroom carpets and some cool kids bedroom carpets ideas.

Far from being limited to the unsightly green outdoor carpet that is found on boat decks, docks, and poolsides, outdoor carpeting can be more stylish than one might think and useful in a number of settings.

One of the most important things to consider in choosing outdoor carpeting is how much exposure to the elements might be involved. Although many brands may be advertised as being “outdoor,” some of these may not actually be manufactured to withstand heavy exposure to rain, snow, or direct sunlight.

Marine carpet is manufactured using a rubber backing and an olefin layer on top that makes it extremely resistant to both water and stains. Olefin, also called polypropylene, is a synthetic material that is known for its quick drying properties and its ability to resist dirt, mold, and fading. Although obviously designed for use around boats and pools, marine carpet is also useful in any place where moisture might be an issue, such as in basements or garages. Marine carpet is available by the roll, similar to indoor carpeting, making it useful in covering large areas and reducing the number of seams. It can often be cut to exactly fit the area to be carpeted and can be applied using carpet glue. Most commonly available in blue and green, marine carpeting can also be found in brown gray, gold, and sometimes other colors as well. It can also be found in a few different patterns. Such variety of available colors and patterns makes marine carpeting a popular choice among those looking for carpeting that looks good for use in and around the home.

Turf and grass outdoor carpets are designed, as one would imagine, to simulate grass. Like marine carpeting, this type is also highly resistant to the elements. One of the drawbacks to turf and grass carpeting is the fact that it is generally only available in squares, which can create a large amount of seeming when compared to marine carpeting. This does, however, allow for the easy replacement of certain areas of carpeting affected by wear and tear, as it is much more convenient to replace a few squares versus replacing an entire area. Turf and grass carpeting generally comes with a sticky backing that can simply be peeled away prior to applying the square to the designated area. Because it is designed to look like grass and its color availability is limited, this type may not be the best choice for use in the home but is well suited for strictly outdoor use or where color is not an issue.

The uses for outdoor carpeting our endless, but the main things to keep in mind is the areas exposure to sunlight and water. Although outdoor rolls and outdoor carpet tiles are made to withstand the elements, some hold up better to fading and high traffic. Additionally, the tiles are easier to replace if placed in a high traffic area.

Discount carpet offers seem to be everywhere you look.

Retailers’ improving their sales turnover is natural enough, as long as it’s not going to disadvantage you in any way.

Many employees that work for the larger shops are inexperienced and lack training, with many on commission schemes to encourage them to sell as much as possible.

Ideally, you want a well trained shop assistant to guide and inform you. Someone who has your interests at heart while offering sound advice. Not a sales person who is only focused on selling you something that earns them a commission.

There are several tricks of the trade, ploys and rip-offs that you should be aware of and safeguard yourself against.

Being able to recognise them will help you to avoid disappointment and upset.

Over the years, I have learned a thing or two about buying and selling carpets as well as studying the tactics of my competitors! I have watched and noted the way other retailers used every trick in the book to get business. In my opinion, many of them using underhand marketing tactics that are less than honest.

One major trick is to inflate the sale price of the carpet and then offer what appears to be a huge discount.

My overriding advice is to always shop around for alternative price quotes: preferably three. That way you can compare prices, quality, value and integrity before you buy your new carpet.

You will soon get a feel for an honest deal – most times your gut instinct will tell you.

If it seems too good to be true – it probably is.

With over 37 years experience in the wholesale and retail carpet and flooring industry, Peter Tozer has helped thousands of consumers to buy carpet, advising them on all aspects of the process.

Peter is now an independent carpet consultant and quality claims inspector as well as an author of articles related to carpets and floor coverings.

Gone are the days when carpet used to be the first choice of most people to install in their home. Nowadays Hardwood flooring is one of the most popular options. There are pros and cons of each type and the prices of each can vary significantly. So before you go out and install new Berber carpet in your home, learn about other more fashionable and stylish options which can also be just as affordable as carpet.

Carpet designs can go out of style in a few short years but hard wood flooring will always be in style. If you ever notice any changes to your Hardwood floor, you can apply a new finish and recoat it to restore its brilliance.

Cleaning and caring for your carpet is a much tougher job than cleaning a wood floor. Even though most carpets are stain resistant, your kids will find a way to stain it right where everyone can see it as they walk in the room.

Then you have to call a professional steam cleaner to come in to clean up the mess. This can set you back a couple hundred bucks pretty easily. These carpet maintenance costs will likely offset any savings you were looking for compared to the cost of installing Hardwood flooring in the first place.

This does not mean that wide plank or bamboo is the perfect choice all the time. If you have little ones running around the house and they slip, they can get hurt by falling on hard wood surface compared to a cushioned carpet surface. You can remedy these situations by buying an area rug and putting it in high-traffic areas where your kids are likely to run around and fall.

Carpet prices can be as low as $1 per square foot with another $.50 to $1 per square foot for padding and installation. It goes up from there depending on what extra features you want like stain resistance and water resistance.

Hardwood flooring prices can also be as low as $1 per square foot for laminate flooring and up to $5 or more for hand scraped wood. Installation can run you $1 per square foot and up. The final decision will be based on your fashion tastes and how much you like cleaning your floor. Hardwood has lower maintenance costs while carpet requires you to vacuum it at least once a week if not more.

If you plan to stay in the home for a while and like a comparable cushion when you take your socks and shoes off, then carpet may be for you. If you plan to sell your home soon, and Hardwood flooring may be your best choice as it will be the most desirable by potential buyers.

There are so many choices when it comes to flooring. I’ve given you a few tips to help you decide between carpet and hardwood. Now it’s time to learn about other types of flooring that you may not have considered.

Next, learn about Specialty Flooring for your home. Visit http://www.specialty-flooring.com/ today to compare prices on the top names in flooring including: Armstrong, Bruce, Pergo, Epoxy, Mohawk, Shaw, and Empire.

Caring and maintain hardwood floors needs the same amount of care you would give to your berber carpet. If you take care and maintain your hardwood floors, they’ll only look better with age. On the other hand, if you abuse and pay no attention to your floor, you’ll be left with very bad looking hardwood floors overtime. Having clean hardwood floors will increase the longevity of your asset.

Here is a list of things that will help preserve your wonderful floor after the wood has been installed:

•	Having bristle type mats at all exterior door entries will be helpful as they will collect bigger pieces of grit or rubble that might scratch or damage your new floor in different ways.

• Placing area rugs at all entry points inside the house can be a nice way to decorate your home as well as protect the nice floor.

• Sometimes furniture can damage your floor too, so use protectors that go underneath the furniture to avoid damaging your hardwood floors. You should also check if grit was collected around the furniture every time you sweep. This will minimize the chances of your floor getting scratched.

•	All water areas should also have area rugs, the kitchen being one of the most important places. You can never be too safe, so other places would be in front of fridges with an ice maker, dishwasher and the kitchen sink area.

• Moving appliances can sometimes prove to be very challenging on hardwood floors, so anytime you move them around, be sure to use protectors to avoid scratches and marks. Delivery guys might not take the necessary measures to prevent damaging your floor, so you should tell them beforehand to be careful. I would also recommend you use 1/8″ Masonite board that will avoid damage to your floor. Make sure your floor is very clean before using this board because even a small piece of grit can damage your floor and will make all the effort of moving the appliances futile.

I would suggests that you sweep or vacuum the hardwood floors often to avoid the possibility of scratches or other types of damage to your floors when they are being installed. You could also get rid of tools that are unnecessarily on the floor and put them somewhere safe. To be safer, after you clean up the floor, you can cover that part or high traffic areas with Masonite board to avoid any kind of damage. The Masonite boards, which are typical 4×2 sheets that can be had for cheap at home improvement stores or online, are a small price to pay to finally end up with an amazing looking floor.

Painting a floor never sounds like it is going to work, but it is one of the quickest and easiest ways to freshen up a space for literally pennies. Even if you paint walls and update everything else in a room, if you have tired, old floors, it just detracts from the updated room. There are special formulations of floor paint that are made to withstand heavy foot traffic and survive the activity that a floor would normally receive. So when you are selecting your floor paint, make sure to purchase high quality paint; properly clean and prepare your floor before painting, and painting your floor will be one of the best decisions that you ever made.

Picking Paint
As you are preparing your floor for painting, you will need to calculate the amount of square feet that you have to cover, and then check to see how much paint you will need to cover that area. Before selecting your paint consider how you want your finished floor to look. While a high gloss finish is easy to clean, it can be slippery. If you select paint with a lower sheen, it may not be quite as slippery. For a high gloss finish you will want to use urethane paint, and for the lower sheen you will want to use an acrylic latex paint. You will also need to choose between oil based and acrylic paint. While oil based paint is usually more durable, it also takes a much longer time to dry, which can be problematic when dealing with a floor.

Preparations
To prepare the floor for painting, begin by cleaning it. Make sure that there is no grease on the floor, because your paint will not stick if there is. If your floor has been painted before, you should clean it with TSP before you paint it again. Remove any loose or flaking paint, and give it a light sanding to help the primer adhere to the old paint. Once everything is clean let your floor completely dry, and then you want to dust mop to remove any remaining debris.

Primer
If this is the first time that the floor has been painted, you want to use a primer that is designed for whatever material your floor is made of. After applying a thin coat of primer, let it dry completely. If you are painting new concrete, let it cure for about six months. Before painting a new concrete floor, you will want to make sure the paint sticks so you should etch it with muriatic acid before applying your primer. After it has completely dried, you can apply your paint.

Finish Coat
After your floor has been prepared and the primer is completely dry, you can apply your finish coat of paint. If you use an extension pole with your roller, painting a floor is very much like sponge mopping a floor. After getting your first layer of paint on, let it completely dry before applying a second coat. Then after you second coat is down, let your floor dry ad harden completely before walking on it or moving any furniture on it.

If you have thought about renovating a room in your house or changing its purpose, carpet may be involved in your renovation plans. If you are looking to change hardwood or tiled floor to a carpeted room then doing it yourself may be a great option and a great way to feel good about changing something in your home. Carpet tile is usually available in your local hardware stores and this option makes it easier to install your own carpet because you can do it in square sections. A do it yourself carpet project is just one of the many things that you can do to improve in your home.

The first thing to decide is what room you will be changing and renovating in your home. If this is your first big renovation project then you may want to pick something small and hidden so that you are not stuck with a huge living room project and renovation supplies everywhere for weeks. If you are renovating a small office or bedroom you must first figure out the size and dimensions of the room. Then you must figure out what carpet you would like to use and how much it costs per square foot. Expenses can be a big issue that alters your plans a little.

When choosing your carpet you need to make sure that you know exactly what you want. Cost, color, texture, and overall look and feel are all big factors when you decide what kind of carpeting you would like. You can usually look at different samples in a home and hardware store or through a catalog company. If you are using someone to install the carpet for you, they will usually bring samples for you to look at, but in a do it yourself project, you do not really use the help of a carpeting company.

The next thing that you must do is figure out how you would like the carpet arranged in your renovated room. Sometimes you can set up special designs but it is often times easier to follow a simple and square plan. It is also a good idea to stick with one kind of carpet. Altering colors is usually okay, but altering textures can be weird looking and may not fit the style of the room as well as you thought. Carpeting is not only meant to be stylish but you want it to feel good. It should feel okay to sit or lie down on and it should also be easily cleaned. A carpet that is hard to clean is not very much fun.

Renovating a room or entire home for new flooring or carpeting can be fun project if you are up for a little bit of work, but in the end it is well worth it. Carpeting can change the look and feel of a room in no time and you can always use different resources for styling help without having to spend a fortune on someone to do it for you.

Marble Tile Background

Marble tiles are considered to be one of the best building materials to be used in homes, even in offices, due to its different qualities and benefits.

Marble tiles have been used for over thousands of years already, wherein they were first cut into slabs and tiles and used for as building materials, dating back as far as the time of ancient Greeks and the Romans. Marble tiles are known for their exquisiteness and resilience, making them very ideal as flooring materials, especially since they are not only functional, but are very aesthetically pleasing as well. Each marble tile vary in color, pattern and design, giving consumers a wonderful array of natural materials which possesses a combination of beauty and toughness, making it the material of choice for construction.

Marble, which is actually a metamorphic rock, is created when limestone is subjected to a considerable amount of heat and pressure within the earth’s crust, making it a dense and durable material, at least when compared with granite or ceramic tiles. It gets its unique coloring, textures and veins from the metamorphic change that the limestone undergoes regarding its marble effect and mineral composition. Basically, marble undergoes a re-crystallization process wherein fossil materials and other sundry elements and minerals are heated and pressurized, creating the stone.

Difference Between Fake And Real Marble Tiles

Real marble tiles have the characteristic of being durable, but it is actually not that durable. Its durability will be defined on how you take care of it, making it more of a hassle and a problem to have around. Caring for real marble tiles is more complex than your regular style of cleaning, wherein mopping and sweeping not enough in terms of caring for your marble tiles. Marble tiles are more susceptible to stains from common household products, such as citrus-based drinks, shampoos, nail removers, or anything that is acidic, since these things may chemically react with the marble tile’s surface. This means that people who have marble tiles for their flooring, for example, will need to clean up any spill immediately using soap and water, in order to avoid staining their marble tile.

Fake marble tiles, on the other hand, need not require the same amount of care when cleaning it since these fake marble tiles are not made of 100% marble, but contain only a percentage of marble in their composition. Fake marble tiles are actually combined with other elements, such as liquid polyester resin, making it a more durable product as compared to the real marble tiles. This means that the products that would easily stain marble tiles are not that effective with fake marble tiles due to their resin coats, making them more impervious, although they could still stain it if not taken care of.

Also, real marble tiles are more expensive than fake marble tiles for obvious reasons, although there are some people who sell fake marble tiles for the same price range as real ones. The more expensive real marble tiles will have some differences with fake ones, such as the texture, finishes, patterns and design, some of which are more difficult to detect over others, but with careful scrutiny and observation, these differences can be seen.
