Tools and Equipment Used in Landscaping

A carefully landscaped yard is the key to the curb appeal of a beautiful home. Curb appeal is important in the enjoyment of the property by current homeowners as well as the most important way to attract potential buyers if the homeowner ever decides to sell the home. In order to create this positive curb appeal, many homeowners turn to professional landscaping companies in order to transform their yard. Landscaping companies specialize in the design, implementation, and upkeep of yards and outdoor features. In order to accomplish this, landscapers use a wide variety of tools and equipment. Listed below is a description of some common tools used by landscapers.

Chainsaws
A chainsaw is a portable mechanical saw used for cutting lumber. Chainsaws can be powered in a variety of ways including electric batteries, gasoline, compressed air, or hydraulic power. In landscaping, chainsaws are used for limbing, tree felling, and removing excess branches and foliage.

Hedge Trimmers
A motorized hedge trimmer is another common piece of equipment used in landscaping. Motorized hedge trimmers allow landscaping technicians to work faster and much more efficiently than they would using manual hedge trimmers.

Pruning shears
For more detailed work like pruning shrubs or dead heading flowers, landscapers use a set of pruning shears. Pruning shears are type of handheld scissor used for cutting smaller foliage like plants or flowers.

Loppers
Loppers are a larger version of pruning shears. They include two larger handles and blades for the manual cutting or “lopping” of large branches or twigs.

What You Need to Know About Boiler Condensing Economizer

If you are looking to save energy, as you can’t keep up with your bills anymore, you should consider investing in a boiler condensing economizer. What you have to do before you decide on which boiler to get is determine the capacity of the boiler, the steam production, the stack gas temperature, fuel consumption, hours of operation and the combustion efficiency. It is also vital that you discover your in-plant uses for the water; some examples are preheating, makeup heating, process heating and domestic water heating. Once you have distinguished what you need the boiler condensing economizer for, it will be easier for you to make a decision.

It could be residential purposes that you need the boiler for, or it could be industrial, either way, you must know exactly what it will be used for before you can search for the right boiler. Cast iron boilers are the most popular ones to use; they are durable, reliable and affordable so keep this in mind when you are shopping for the perfect boiler. Another aspect you have to take into consideration before purchasing is the thermal requirements to be met through installing an economizer boiler. Cost savings as well as fuel energy are important factors too and should not be neglected.

What you should do is obtain quotations from different companies, but make sure that the quotation includes the installation as well as the boiler itself, unless you know how it should be installed. However, even if you do know a little about boilers, it is not advised that you attempt the installation yourself, but rather get a professional in to do it for you as that way you know that it is done properly and should something happen with the boiler after that you can call them back to fix it and it won’t be your fault, nor should you have to pay for it if the problem stems from the way in which the installation was done.

The heat in the exhaust gases that is available in a boiler condensing economizer will depend on how much hydrogen is in the fuel, it will also depend on the fuel firing rate, the stack gas temperature and the amount of excess oxygen found in the flue.

If a boiler plant is able to provide as much as 500,000lbs of much needed steam for the heating system, the best system to use here would be a direct contact boiler. This is one of the condensing economizers, so it should all work out just fine. This should save anything up to about 20MMtu, but of course this amount would depend on the boiler load used at one time. Due to the fact that the condensate will not go back from the heating system, energy that is recovered will be used further, to heat the plant makeup water.

A boiler condensing economizer will benefit you in more ways than one; not only is it cheaper to have, but it is also easy to use. You will be much happier with the performance of one of these boilers compared to that of a traditional boiler system.

Heating and Cooling Systems For Your Home

The heating and cooling systems of your home are also known as its HVAC equipment. This acronym stands for Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning. The HVAC equipment is responsible for the temperature, humidity & quality of the indoor environment and comfort for the habitants.

There are many different types of heating, ventilating & cooling equipment. The type of equipment used in any particular area has to with its climate. The length & coldness of winter and the length & hotness of summer are the main factors in determining what is needed. The humidity levels also play an important role on what equipment would be required.

HEATING SYSTEMS

Heating your home obviously is a process of adding heat to the indoor environment therefore increasing the temperature. The typical winter time thermostat temperature setting is 66F to 70F with the average being around 68F. This is a reasonable temp for comfort and efficiency. Below are the most common heating systems installed in new homes today.

Forced Air - Most common type of heating and cooling systems used. A blower circulates air across a heat exchanger to heat the home. A/C systems can added to these systems.

Heat Pump – There are several types of heat pumps, however most common is the air-source heat pump. Heat pumps provide the heating and cooling for your home.

Hydronic - Water is heated by a boiler and circulated through radiators located in the home.

Radiant – Water is heated by a boiler and circulated through tubing located in floors, walls or ceilings to warm those surfaces which in turns heats the space by radiation.

Geothermal - A heat pump that uses the ground or water for its heat source. It serves your heating and cooling needs in one system.

Electric - Heat is supplied through electric or resistance heaters when electricity is passed through the device.

COOLING SYSTEMS

The cooling of your home, also known as air conditioning, is the removal of heat to cool and dehumidify the indoor air. The typical summer time thermostat setting is 74F to 80F with the average being around 78F. This average temperature is reasonable for comfort and efficiency. Below are the most common A/C systems installed in new homes today.

Forced Air – Most common type of heating and cooling systems installed. A compressor circulates a refrigerant between two coils (one indoors & one outdoors), then a blower blows through the indoor coil which removes the heat from the home and then it is circulated to the exterior to dissipate the heat that was absorbed to the outdoor air. It uses a system of ductwork to distribute the conditioned air throughout the home.

Ductless Split System – A mini-split air conditioning system. Similar to the traditional split system, however each room has a air handler located it for individual control and therefore no need for ductwork.

VENTILATION

The purpose of ventilation in a home is to help control the indoor air quality & humidity levels. It is best to control this ventilation through the heating and cooling systems of the home.

Kitchens and bathrooms have ventilation systems for removal of odors and moisture. If these are ducted through unconditioned areas (ex: attic, crawlspace), they should be insulated to prevent condensation from forming.

Clothes dryers are another form of ventilation where the moisture is vented to the exterior. This ducting should be made of metal pipe for proper fire protection and its joints are to be only taped together (high quality aluminum tape is best) as screws will collect lint & eventually clog the duct. Clothes dryers should NEVER be vented to the interior (some stores sell this type of lint collector for this purpose) as this will increase the indoor humidity levels tremendously and will contribute to mold growth & poor indoor air quality.

Today’s homes are being built much tighter therefore allowing less infiltration of outdoor air. The air exchange rate (outdoor air that leaks into the home) of newer homes is much lower than older homes, therefore the indoor air can become stagnant and unhealthy if nothing is done to increase this air exchange rate. Most home heating and cooling units, including forced air heating systems, do NOT mechanically bring fresh air into the house.

One way of doing this is with a heat recovery ventilator. This device brings in outdoor air through a type of exchanger where the indoor also passes through it, therefore transferring the heat from the indoor air into the outdoor air that is being brought into the home. You can also installed a duct on your HVAC return plenum directly from the outdoors so that any time your home is under negative pressure, it draws the air through this duct instead of through the cracks in your home.

Alternative Wall Heaters

There are several types and brands of wall heater. They are fairly simple to install and not too expensive to buy and to run. Many people buy them for their homes either because their homes are not heated by central heating, or because there are certain rooms of their homes that are either not reached by the central heating or not warmed quick enough by it.

The three types of wall heaters are electric heaters, propane heaters, and gas heaters. The advantage to electric wall heaters is that you plug them in and voila! That is all there is to it, while a gas heater needs a gas line installed, which costs more and propane wall heaters will need propane. There are also dual fuel sourced wall heaters on the market that can run on more than one energy source. If you are someone who is concerned about the environment and this is something that is important to you, then you should note that the gas wall heater is the most environmentally friendly of the three mentioned above; however, if you favor plain old convenience more than anything else, the electric heater would likely be the way to go; in fact, out of the three heater types mentioned above, the electric wall heater seems to be the most popular.

There are also two ’set up’ types for wall heaters – one is set up on the wall with hooks or fasteners, then plugged in or attached to its source of energy. This has the advantage that it could be moved if you like; simply unfasten the fasteners and re-fasten them where you would like to move the heater to. The second type is called an ‘in wall heater’ – that does not mean it is built into the wall when the house is built, but it is inset into the wall. Whatever type of heater you buy it will set you back around US$100 or so, although this also depends on what brand you buy. The wall heater should come with a ten year warranty on the element and one year on the other components that go with it. This price range is for a 2000 watt heater, which will likely heat your room up in a quick amount of time. Most heaters also come with a thermostat included, although you should always check that this is the case before you buy the heater. The thermostat helps to regulate the temperature in your room, preventing it from getting too hot (or too cold.)

Another point to keep in mind when buying a heater is that it is advantageous for you to get one that already has a blower included, you will need one if you want the room to heat quickly. Many heaters do not include them and you have to buy them as a separate addition, which will set you back a little more.

How to Take Care of and Maintain Hardwood Floors

Published by San Antonio Decorator under Flooring

Caring and maintain hardwood floors needs the same amount of care you would give to your berber carpet. If you take care and maintain your hardwood floors, they’ll only look better with age. On the other hand, if you abuse and pay no attention to your floor, you’ll be left with very bad looking hardwood floors overtime. Having clean hardwood floors will increase the longevity of your asset.

Here is a list of things that will help preserve your wonderful floor after the wood has been installed:

• Having bristle type mats at all exterior door entries will be helpful as they will collect bigger pieces of grit or rubble that might scratch or damage your new floor in different ways.

• Placing area rugs at all entry points inside the house can be a nice way to decorate your home as well as protect the nice floor.

• Sometimes furniture can damage your floor too, so use protectors that go underneath the furniture to avoid damaging your hardwood floors. You should also check if grit was collected around the furniture every time you sweep. This will minimize the chances of your floor getting scratched.

• All water areas should also have area rugs, the kitchen being one of the most important places. You can never be too safe, so other places would be in front of fridges with an ice maker, dishwasher and the kitchen sink area.

• Moving appliances can sometimes prove to be very challenging on hardwood floors, so anytime you move them around, be sure to use protectors to avoid scratches and marks. Delivery guys might not take the necessary measures to prevent damaging your floor, so you should tell them beforehand to be careful. I would also recommend you use 1/8″ Masonite board that will avoid damage to your floor. Make sure your floor is very clean before using this board because even a small piece of grit can damage your floor and will make all the effort of moving the appliances futile.

I would suggests that you sweep or vacuum the hardwood floors often to avoid the possibility of scratches or other types of damage to your floors when they are being installed. You could also get rid of tools that are unnecessarily on the floor and put them somewhere safe. To be safer, after you clean up the floor, you can cover that part or high traffic areas with Masonite board to avoid any kind of damage. The Masonite boards, which are typical 4×2 sheets that can be had for cheap at home improvement stores or online, are a small price to pay to finally end up with an amazing looking floor.

Painting a Floor That Will Last

Published by San Antonio Decorator under Flooring

Painting a floor never sounds like it is going to work, but it is one of the quickest and easiest ways to freshen up a space for literally pennies. Even if you paint walls and update everything else in a room, if you have tired, old floors, it just detracts from the updated room. There are special formulations of floor paint that are made to withstand heavy foot traffic and survive the activity that a floor would normally receive. So when you are selecting your floor paint, make sure to purchase high quality paint; properly clean and prepare your floor before painting, and painting your floor will be one of the best decisions that you ever made.

Picking Paint
As you are preparing your floor for painting, you will need to calculate the amount of square feet that you have to cover, and then check to see how much paint you will need to cover that area. Before selecting your paint consider how you want your finished floor to look. While a high gloss finish is easy to clean, it can be slippery. If you select paint with a lower sheen, it may not be quite as slippery. For a high gloss finish you will want to use urethane paint, and for the lower sheen you will want to use an acrylic latex paint. You will also need to choose between oil based and acrylic paint. While oil based paint is usually more durable, it also takes a much longer time to dry, which can be problematic when dealing with a floor.

Preparations
To prepare the floor for painting, begin by cleaning it. Make sure that there is no grease on the floor, because your paint will not stick if there is. If your floor has been painted before, you should clean it with TSP before you paint it again. Remove any loose or flaking paint, and give it a light sanding to help the primer adhere to the old paint. Once everything is clean let your floor completely dry, and then you want to dust mop to remove any remaining debris.

Primer
If this is the first time that the floor has been painted, you want to use a primer that is designed for whatever material your floor is made of. After applying a thin coat of primer, let it dry completely. If you are painting new concrete, let it cure for about six months. Before painting a new concrete floor, you will want to make sure the paint sticks so you should etch it with muriatic acid before applying your primer. After it has completely dried, you can apply your paint.

Finish Coat
After your floor has been prepared and the primer is completely dry, you can apply your finish coat of paint. If you use an extension pole with your roller, painting a floor is very much like sponge mopping a floor. After getting your first layer of paint on, let it completely dry before applying a second coat. Then after you second coat is down, let your floor dry ad harden completely before walking on it or moving any furniture on it.

A Project For Your Floor

Published by San Antonio Decorator under Flooring

If you have thought about renovating a room in your house or changing its purpose, carpet may be involved in your renovation plans. If you are looking to change hardwood or tiled floor to a carpeted room then doing it yourself may be a great option and a great way to feel good about changing something in your home. Carpet tile is usually available in your local hardware stores and this option makes it easier to install your own carpet because you can do it in square sections. A do it yourself carpet project is just one of the many things that you can do to improve in your home.

The first thing to decide is what room you will be changing and renovating in your home. If this is your first big renovation project then you may want to pick something small and hidden so that you are not stuck with a huge living room project and renovation supplies everywhere for weeks. If you are renovating a small office or bedroom you must first figure out the size and dimensions of the room. Then you must figure out what carpet you would like to use and how much it costs per square foot. Expenses can be a big issue that alters your plans a little.

When choosing your carpet you need to make sure that you know exactly what you want. Cost, color, texture, and overall look and feel are all big factors when you decide what kind of carpeting you would like. You can usually look at different samples in a home and hardware store or through a catalog company. If you are using someone to install the carpet for you, they will usually bring samples for you to look at, but in a do it yourself project, you do not really use the help of a carpeting company.

The next thing that you must do is figure out how you would like the carpet arranged in your renovated room. Sometimes you can set up special designs but it is often times easier to follow a simple and square plan. It is also a good idea to stick with one kind of carpet. Altering colors is usually okay, but altering textures can be weird looking and may not fit the style of the room as well as you thought. Carpeting is not only meant to be stylish but you want it to feel good. It should feel okay to sit or lie down on and it should also be easily cleaned. A carpet that is hard to clean is not very much fun.

Renovating a room or entire home for new flooring or carpeting can be fun project if you are up for a little bit of work, but in the end it is well worth it. Carpeting can change the look and feel of a room in no time and you can always use different resources for styling help without having to spend a fortune on someone to do it for you.

Electric Gates – 9 Reasons Why You Should Automate Your Gates

Published by San Antonio Decorator under Electrical

Imagine arriving home on a dark stormy night and having to get out of the car to open the gates. Then driving through and having to get out again to close them. Imagine too, the vulnerability of your home to intruders and burglars if your gates are left open because people do not bother to close them. Electric gates solve these problems and others too.

The number one benefit is security. They provide a buffer zone between your home and the undesirable elements lurking on the streets. Electrically controlled gates are a serious deterrent to the opportunist burglar, car thief or vandal. They are powered by motors that make it difficult for intruders to force them open and you can also fit a lock for even greater protection. Your automated gates could form part of a comprehensive home security system which would include video surveillance of the entrance and boundaries of your property.

They also keep out unwanted callers and door-to-door salesmen. Visitors will normally use an intercom fitted by the gate to contact you before you let them in. This allows you to decide who enters your property.

Comfort and convenience is a major benefit. It is simple to open your gates using a remote control without having to leave your car. Would you like stay warm and dry inside your car, then with the press of a button, open and close your gate? Ordinary gates are often left open because it is just too much trouble to manually open and close them every time you pass through your drive. Electric gates have a very practical benefit too. If your gates are large and heavy it may be physically difficult to open and close them manually.

Providing safety for children and pets is very important. Just as unwanted visitors are prevented from entering by automated gates so children can be kept safely inside. Electric gates can be set up to close automatically after they have been used so you do not need to worry that you have left them open and allowed your children or pets to wander out.

Electric gates will keep out wild animals like deer and rabbits and prevent them damaging the plants in your garden.

They can also give you privacy. If you have automatic solid wooden gates installed they will prevent prying eyes observing your home.

Automated gates will also prevent other motorists using your drive to turn their cars or even to park.

An attractively designed set of automatically operating gates will enhance the appearance of your home. They will give it more style and exclusivity and so add to the value of your home.

Finally, you may be able to benefit from a lower insurance rate. Some insurers may offer a discount for improved perimeter protection.

There are just so many benefits to be had from electric gates that everyone who owns a home with a drive should strongly consider installing a set. You can improve your home security, your family’s safety, make life easier and add to the value of your home all at the same time.

Adding An Electrical Box and Hiding Cables Like A Pro

Published by San Antonio Decorator under Electrical

All the electronics on the market lately are filling up our homes. There is an increasing need for more electric outlets throughout our homes. Some useful tips on how to create an electrical extension are outlined in this article.

The most common need people have is adding an additional outlet box. They never are where you need them! As with anything electrical, take proper precautions against electrical shocks and know your local codes for proper cable types, shielding plates, etc.

Sometimes it just your lucky day and the room on the other side of wall has an outlet that is very close. Back to back is ideal but even one stud off is not a problem. Just make sure the circuit won’t be overloaded by adding an additional set of plugs.

Use a stud finder and find out where the adjacent studs are for where you want to put the outlet box. Depending on the type of box you have, either cut out the proper size hole next to the stud or somewhere in the center. I prefer the renovation boxes with the tabs that are designed to fit in the drywall away from the studs. Align your box hole so it isn’t directly behind the other box as two deep boxes won’t fit back to back in a two by four stud wall.

If you are within the same studs, it is now a simple matter of running the proper wire or conduit from the old box to the new one. If you need to go one stud over, cutting your hole close to the stud makes it a little easier. From the box hole access, drill a hole in the center of the stud following proper guidelines to maintain structural integrity. Keep the hole size at a minimum and no more than 40% of the stud width.

If instead you want to extend power from an existing box in the room, there are several ways to run the wire between the boxes. One common method is to remove the baseboard trim. Then cut out some of the wall board behind the baseboard and make small notches (not to exceed 25% of the stud width) in each stud or drill holes in the center of each stud to run the cable for the extension. After installing the cable, make sure to use steel plates on each stud if you did notches to prevent any drywall screws from penetrating the wires.

If you drilled holes in the center and come to a corner, it can sometimes be problematic when it is solid. You need to drill a hole from each side until they meet. Then either fish something flexible through the hole or use two fish tapes with a hook on the end and get them to catch. Put lots of lube on the cable and pull it through.

Going around doors is a similar exercise. The best way is to remove the trim molding and usually there is enough room with minimal notching to run the cable around the door.

If you have attic or basement access, there is another way to run new cable. Drill holes through the plate where the existing circuit is and where you want to add an additional outlet. Sometimes you will run into fire stops or cross braces in the middle of the wall. If you are putting in a switch, many times you can get close enough from the switch box hole to drill through the brace. Otherwise you will need to cut out a small section of wallboard and make a notch.

There are a number of safe and effective ways to add electrical outlets throughout your home without damage and lots of work. With the use of smart safety procedures, following local codes, and some electrical work you can have extensions in all of the places your home needs.

The Shocking Truth About Electrical Home Improvement

Published by San Antonio Decorator under Electrical

When facing a home repair job that needs electrical home improvement, you should consult a professional, or hopefully take a class at your local building supply store for the best results. This article will expose some of the primary concerns when tackling the wiring in your home. Learn what to avoid and how to make the project one that is executed correctly.

Safety First

When working with electrical current and wires, it is advisable to wear rubber soled shoes to avoid being shocked. There are still other dangers involved, but this is one that is often overlooked. Also, make sure that the surrounding environment you are working in is clear from any water. Water and electricity do not mix. If you are using tools for your electrical home improvement, make sure that all of the cords are safe and clear of any damage. Caution – Make sure to check them when they are unplugged, and if you find any open wiring on any of the cords be sure to tape them with some good quality electrical tape or discard them and use a cord that you know is safe.

Start With A Smaller Project

Before you take on an electrical home improvement project, it is better to start with something you have more confidence or experience with. Changing a light switch might be a good place to start You could make some decorative changes to the light switches while you are learning about wiring in your home.

Installing A Circuit Box

One of the bigger electrical home improvement jobs that you may face is, changing out an old circuit breaker box and installing a new one. If you live in a home that was built several years ago there is a good chance that an electrical home improvement project is in order for this area of the home. Before beginning this type of project you should consult with your local electrical supply store. If you are the least bit unsure of yourself you should definitely consider having a licensed professional electrician do this job for you. It could mean the difference between life and death.

Try Installing a Ceiling Fan

One electrical home improvement project you might want to try is to install a ceiling fan in the bedroom or family room. This is a rather simple project if you are careful. If you purchased a new ceiling fan it should come with some detailed instructions for installation. If you are installing a ceiling fan that did not come with directions, you can usually find help at your local building supply store. Another tip for this type of project is to make sure you have some electrical tape and twist nuts for the wires. When tackling your next electrical home improvement project, make sure that you’re well prepared and stay safe.
